Kiel Canal Tour
The Kiel Canal is the busiest artificial waterway in the world — and begins right in Kiel at the Holtenau lock. This guide is devoted entirely to the canal: the lock with its chambers, the historic lighthouse, the lifting and swing bridges and a cruise on the water. A day for technology fans and everyone who loves the great shipping traffic.
Best time to visit: April to October — in good weather the view of the lock and ships is at its best
Day 1
At the world's busiest canal
We begin at the Holtenau lock, explore the lighthouse and bridges, take a canal cruise and watch the shipping traffic.
- 9:30 - 11:30
Holtenau lock
The Holtenau lock is the eastern gateway of the Kiel Canal. From the viewing platform you can watch freighters and yachts pass through the large and small lock chambers — a fascinating spectacle of water, steel and precision right on the fjord.
Tip: Ship schedules are available online — so you won't miss a large ship in the lock.
- 11:45 - 13:00
Lighthouse and lifting bridges in Holtenau
The historic Holtenau lighthouse of 1895 is the district's landmark and a venue for many weddings. Nearby, lifting and swing bridges cross the canal — impressive engineering that links road and shipping.
- 13:00 - 14:15
Lunch at the Tiessenkai
At the old Tiessenkai in Holtenau there are maritime venues right by the water — fresh fish with a view of the canal and the ships coming and going. An authentic spot with harbour flair.
- 14:30 - 16:30
Canal cruise
From the water the canal shows itself at its best: excursion boats travel a little way into the Kiel Canal, past the lock, bridges and shores. Up close, the large freighters look even more imposing.
- 16:45 - 18:00
Watching ships from the shore
To wind down, a spot on the canal bank: here container ships, tankers and cruise ships pass by, often within touching distance. A meditative spectacle for everyone who likes to watch the great shipping traffic.
- 19:00 - 21:00
An evening in Wik or Mitte
Back towards the city, venues in Wik near the canal or in the city centre beckon. Northern German cuisine and a freshly poured beer round off the day at the world's busiest canal.
