District

Wik

Wik in the north is deeply tied to Kiel's maritime history. The Tirpitz harbor with its naval vessels, the barracks, the fjord-ferry landing and the start of the Kiel Canal define the district. From the canal bank you can watch freighters and cruise ships on their way to the Holtenau locks.

The navy's maritime legacy

Wik has been inseparably tied to the navy since the founding of the German Empire. The Tirpitz harbor still houses vessels of the armed forces, and the extensive barracks shape large parts of the district. This military history formed Wik: planned street layouts, crew quarters and administrative buildings recall the time when Kiel was developed into the empire's most important naval port. Walking through the quarter, you keep discovering traces of this maritime past between residential buildings - traces that still give the northern district its unmistakable character.

Where the canal begins

The Kiel Canal, the world's busiest artificial waterway, begins in Wik. From the canal bank you can watch the coming and going of the freighters, tankers and cruise ships passing on their way to the Holtenau locks. The towpath is ideal for walks and bike rides, with wide views across the water. The immediate proximity of fjord and canal makes Wik an unusual place where two waterways meet directly, and shipping becomes a constant companion of daily life.

Living and travel in the north

Besides navy and canal, Wik is a lively residential district with established housing and good local amenities. Bus lines along Holtenauer Straße and Prinz-Heinrich-Straße link the quarter with the city center and university. Especially charming is arriving by fjord ferry, whose landing connects the west bank with the city center. To the Kiellinie and Düsternbrook it is only a short way along the fjord. Heading further north, you quickly reach Holtenau with its locks and lighthouse via Wik.
