Ship-spotting at the locks

Holtenau is probably Kiel's most exciting spot for anyone who loves big ships. At the locks, where the Kiel Canal meets the fjord, you can watch up close as freighters, tankers and cruise giants pass through the lock chambers. Tiessenkai and lighthouse

The Tiessenkai at Holtenau's old harbor is a maritime gem with special charm. Fish stalls, restaurants and small shops line the quay, where sailing boats and traditional ships moor. Right next door stands the striking lighthouse of 1895, whose red-brick form has become the district's landmark and occasionally opens for weddings and visits. Enjoying a fresh fish roll here while gazing across the fjord, you experience Kiel from its cozy, harbor-side side. On weekends especially, the Tiessenkai is a popular outing destination.

Arriving across the fjord

Holtenau lies in the north of Kiel on the west bank and can be reached in several ways. Bus lines link the district with the city center and Wik, but arriving by fjord ferry is especially appealing, its line running to Holtenau and on to Laboe. From the landing the Tiessenkai and lighthouse are just a few steps away. Cyclists follow the fjord or canal-side path, which is particularly scenic. Via the lock bridges you can also reach the opposite canal bank and the northern neighboring villages.
