Shopping between fjord and station

Mitte concentrates Kiel's retail life: from the main station the Holstenstraße runs dead straight as a pedestrian zone to Asmus-Bremer-Platz, lined with department stores, chains and smaller shops. Those wanting calm turn into the side lanes toward the Old Market, where cafés and weekly-market stalls set the tone. The Sophienhof mall right by the station adds covered shopping. Conveniently, almost everything is within walking distance, and the fjord is only a few minutes away in every direction. A browse and a harbor walk are easy to combine.

History you can touch

Despite heavy wartime destruction, Mitte preserves visible traces of the past. The Old Market with St Nicholas' Church forms the oldest core, fronted by Ernst Barlach's 'Spirit Fighter', one of the city's best-known sculptures. The town hall tower, modelled on St Mark's in Venice, can be climbed on guided tours and offers a panorama over fjord and center. Around the Hörn the striking folding bridge recalls Kiel's role as a harbor city. Walk attentively and you keep spotting older façades and small monuments between the post-war buildings.

Getting around

As a transport hub Mitte could hardly be more central: the main station links Kiel with Hamburg and the surrounding area, and the central bus station right in front reaches almost every district. The fjord-ferry landings at the station and the Hörn carry passengers across the water to the east bank and the north. Drivers find space in several car parks, but in the dense center switching to bus or ferry pays off. For cyclists, short routes along the Hörn and the Kiellinie lead out into the green.
