Beaches on the fjord

Kiel is one of the few large cities with genuine Baltic beaches within its limits. The best known is Falckenstein in the north, a long sandy beach with beach chairs, swimming and surfing and a view of the canal entrance. On the opposite side of the fjord lies Schilksee with its Olympic center, a hub of sailing since the 1972 Games. Further south, Möltenort in Heikendorf invites a quieter beach day with a promenade and harbor atmosphere. All beaches are easy to reach from the city center, some especially scenic by fjord ferry.

Swimming, surfing, sailing

Kiel's beaches are more than places to lie down. Falckenstein offers good conditions for surfers and stand-up paddlers, while Schilksee, with its marinas and regatta courses, is a magnet for sailors. Families value the gently sloping areas and the play options on the sand. Beach chairs can be rented in many spots, and small kiosks provide refreshments. Those who like an active break combine a beach day with a walk on the promenade or a bike ride along the fjord. Note that the Baltic stays refreshingly cool even in summer – one for brave swimmers.

The best beach season

The swimming season runs roughly from June to September, with August usually bringing the warmest water. On sunny weekends Falckenstein and Schilksee fill up, so an early arrival or a midweek visit pays off. Möltenort offers calm and is often less crowded. Outside the season the beaches make lovely destinations for walks with fjord views. Bring sun protection, as the wind makes it easy to underestimate the sun, and a windproof jacket, since a breeze almost always blows on the open fjord. The fjord ferry is a relaxed way to arrive.
