Fjord & Water in Kiel
The Kiellinie promenade, the fjord ferry, the river Schwentine
Life on the fjord
The Kiel Fjord is the city's lifeline – a narrow arm of the Baltic that reaches far inland. Along its western shore runs the Kiellinie, a popular promenade where you can walk, jog and cycle for kilometers right by the water. Cafés, the GEOMAR aquarium and berths for research and naval vessels line the route. To experience the fjord from the water, take the fjord ferry: it links the city center with places like Laboe and Friedrichsort and doubles as an affordable sightseeing tour. To the south, the river Schwentine flows into the fjord and invites quiet nature walks.
Take the ferry, not the bus
The fjord ferry is more than transport – it is the loveliest way to get to know Kiel. From the landing by the station bridge it passes shipyards, the naval harbor and the beaches toward the mouth of the fjord. Along the way, views open up of the Laboe memorial and the incoming ships. The crossing is part of local public transport and therefore inexpensive. Plan it for a sunny day, sit out on deck and combine the trip with a beach visit in Laboe or Möltenort. Photographers should grab a spot at the starboard railing.
Waterways around Kiel
Beyond the fjord, water shapes Kiel in many ways. The Schwentine, a small river in the Dietrichsdorf district, can be explored on walking trails and partly by canoe – a green contrast to the maritime bustle. Water-sports fans find good conditions in the bays for sailing, stand-up paddling and kayaking. The best time is May to September, when the water is warmer and the promenade lively. Those seeking calm should come in the morning or midweek. A windproof jacket and sun protection are wise, as the open fjord often brings a fresh breeze.
