Landmarks in Kiel
Laboe Memorial, the town hall tower, St Nicholas' Church and more
Kiel's striking skyline
Kiel's landmarks tell the story of a city by the water. At the mouth of the fjord stands the 72-meter Laboe Naval Memorial, whose viewing platform offers a wide panorama over the Baltic and the shipping traffic. In the city center the town hall tower, just over a hundred meters tall, dominates the view and can be climbed at certain times in summer. St Nicholas' Church on the Old Market forms the spiritual heart with its Gothic core. First-time visitors should link these three points: they sit along the fjord and old town and are easy to explore on foot or by fjord ferry.
Towers, churches, monuments
Beyond the big names, a second look at smaller landmarks pays off. In front of St Nicholas' Church stands Ernst Barlach's striking bronze sculpture „Geistkämpfer“, one of the city's best-known works of art. At the harbor, shipyard cranes and ferry terminals recall Kiel's role as a Baltic port. The Laboe memorial pairs naturally with the neighboring U-995 submarine museum, so a trip to the fjord's mouth combines several highlights at once. Allow a full day for the mix of tower climb, church and memorial, ideally when visibility is clear.
The best time for the view
The vantage points work best in clear weather. Summer is ideal, as the town hall tower and the Laboe memorial reliably open then and the fjord ferry runs frequently. For photos, the soft light of late afternoon is rewarding, when the sun stands over the western shore of the fjord. Visitors during Kieler Woche in June will also spot the sailing ships on the water from elevated points. Sturdy footwear for tower stairs and a windproof jacket belong in your bag almost year-round on the coast, even at the height of summer.
