Strolling the Kiellinie

The Kiellinie is Kiel's most popular waterfront promenade and the heart of Düsternbrook. For nearly three kilometers it runs right along the water, past marinas, the marine-science institute with its aquarium and seals, and countless benches with fjord views. Walkers, joggers and cyclists share the path while ferries, sailing boats and naval vessels glide by offshore. At sunset especially the promenade fills up, and snack bars and cafés invite a break. During Kieler Woche the Kiellinie turns into one of the city's central festival miles.

Politics and grand villas

Düsternbrook is Kiel's political and stately quarter. The state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein sits in the Landeshaus, and close by stands Kiel Castle, today used as an events and concert venue. Along the quiet streets above the fjord stand grand period and Art Nouveau villas, many now home to consulates, ministries and law firms. The spacious Reventlou lawn opens onto the fjord and is a favorite spot for picnics and kite-flying. Walking through the quarter, you sense the refined, dignified atmosphere of this prized residential area.

Location and routes

Düsternbrook adjoins the city center directly to the north, so the Holstenstraße is only a few minutes away on foot or by bike. Bus lines along Düsternbrooker Weg link the quarter with the main station and the university. To arrive by water, use the fjord-ferry landings serving Reventlou and Bellevue. From the castle the Kiellinie is just a few steps away, and along the fjord the route continues seamlessly to Wik and Holtenau. Parking is limited in the villa quarter - a walk is more rewarding anyway.
