Maritime & Navy in Kiel
Submarine U-995, the Kiel Canal, the naval harbor
A navy city by the water
Kiel has always been a naval and maritime city, and you feel it everywhere along the fjord. Its emblem is the Laboe Naval Memorial with the U-995 submarine in front of it, which can be entered as a technical museum and offers a rare glimpse of the cramped life of a submarine crew. On the western shore lies the naval harbor, where ships of the German Navy moor. To understand maritime Kiel, combine a visit to Laboe with a fjord cruise that brings shipyards, harbor facilities and the typical bustle of a Baltic port up close.
From the canal to the locks
A technical highlight lies on the city's northern edge: the Kiel Canal connects the Baltic and the North Sea and is one of the world's busiest artificial waterways. At the Holtenau locks, a viewing platform lets you watch large freighters and cruise ships passing through – a fascinating spectacle, especially for families. Nearby, historic lighthouses mark the canal entrance. Plan your visit loosely, as the lockings depend on shipping traffic; patience often pays off. The nearby Tiessenkai with its cafés and restaurants makes a good break with a view of the water.
Planning a maritime day
Maritime Kiel can be enjoyed year-round, but summer offers the most. Ferries then run frequently, the Laboe submarine is open and the cruise season brings large ships to the terminals. For a well-rounded program, pair the memorial and submarine in Laboe in the morning with watching the Holtenau locks in the afternoon. For more depth, add the Maritime Museum at the Hörn. Sturdy shoes and a windproof jacket are advisable, as it often blows fresh at the quay and canal. Check exact opening times in advance.
