Holtenau Locks
The Holtenau Locks form the eastern entrance to the Kiel Canal and connect the Kiel Fjord with the world's busiest artificial waterway. Four lock chambers — two large ones from 1914 and two older, smaller ones — equalise the water level between canal and Baltic Sea. From the viewing platform at the lock site, visitors can watch large freighters and cruise ships being locked in and out up close. A small information board and the neighbouring gauge house explain the technology. A must for anyone who loves ships.
From the Eider Canal to the great lock
As early as 1784 the narrow Eider Canal linked the Baltic and the North Sea, but the first large locks at Holtenau only appeared with the construction of the Kiel Canal. As ship traffic grew rapidly, two additional, considerably larger chambers were built between 1911 and 1914 — each a good 310 metres long. This allowed the complex to accommodate ever-bigger freighters and warships. The old and new chambers still lie side by side and vividly tell the story of shipping around Kiel. Look closely and you can spot the different building eras in the masonry and gate technology.
Experiencing the locking up close
From the viewpoint at the Tiessenkai you look straight into the chambers and watch ships entering, the gates slowly closing and the water level equalising. The difference in height between fjord and canal is usually small, yet the orderly manoeuvring of the big vessels is a fascinating spectacle. It is especially impressive when cruise ships or laden bulk carriers pass and tugs assist. In the late afternoon, when the light falls low across the canal, the finest photos emerge. Patience pays off — ship traffic follows fixed locking times.
Getting there and the surroundings in Holtenau
The lock lies in the Holtenau district on the northern shore of the fjord and is easily reached by bus or bike; a scenic cycle route leads here along the Kiellinie and through Wik. Right next door stands the historic lighthouse of 1895, and the former gauge house with the lock promenade rounds out a visit. A walk to the canal's edge is rewarded with views of passing ships. Cafés and eateries in Holtenau invite a break. With more time, combine the stop with a canal cruise or a trip along the bank towards Brunsbüttel.
