History in Kiel
The old town, Friedrichsort fortress and the shipyard heritage
Kiel's long history
Kiel's history reaches back to the 13th century, when the city was founded and later joined the Hanseatic League. Traces of that era survive in the old town around the Old Market and St Nicholas' Church, whose origins lie in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries Kiel grew into a university, port and naval city. Its history is closely tied to the water: shipyards, merchant vessels and the navy shaped both the economy and the cityscape. To dive into the past, start in the old town and round off the walk with the Maritime Museum at the harbor.
Fortress and shipyards
Two themes especially shape Kiel's history: defence and shipbuilding. In the north, Friedrichsort fortress, built in the 17th century to guard the entrance to the fjord, recalls the city's military importance. For decades Kiel was a center of German shipbuilding, its yards constructing merchant and warships and shaping the look of the fjord. This shipyard heritage can be traced today at the harbor, at the still-active facilities and in the Maritime Museum. A historical walk links the old town in the center with the harbor and, a little outside, Friedrichsort fortress on the fjord.
Following the traces
Kiel's history can be explored year-round, as many stations lie outdoors or in museums. For a historical day, a route runs from the Old Market with St Nicholas' Church via the harbor with the Maritime Museum out to Friedrichsort. The fjord ferry is a stylish way to connect individual stops along the water. For outdoor sightseeing, pack weatherproof clothing, as it can turn fresh on the fjord. Check museum opening hours and the accessibility of historic sites in advance, as these can vary seasonally. That way a relaxed journey through Kiel's past comes together.
