Kiel's long history

Kiel's history reaches back to the 13th century, when the city was founded and later joined the Hanseatic League. Traces of that era survive in the old town around the Old Market and St Nicholas' Church, whose origins lie in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries Kiel grew into a university, port and naval city.
