Kunsthalle zu Kiel

The Kunsthalle zu Kiel was opened in 1909 and belongs to Kiel University. It is one of the oldest art museums in northern Germany. The collection comprises painting and sculpture of the 19th century, Expressionism, classical modernism and contemporary art, including works by Munch, Nolde and Beckmann. Changing exhibitions are devoted to current positions in contemporary art. With its location on Düsternbrooker Weg near the fjord, the gallery combines cultural enjoyment with maritime surroundings and is a firm part of Kiel's cultural life.

A university museum with a long tradition

Since its opening in 1909, the Kunsthalle has belonged to Kiel University and ranks among the oldest art museums in northern Germany. Its roots reach back even further: as early as the 19th century the university collected artworks for research and teaching. Over the decades the holdings grew into one of the most significant collections in Schleswig-Holstein. The building on Düsternbrooker Weg combines academic tradition with museum aspirations. To this day the Kunsthalle remains closely interwoven with university life and sees itself as a place where art history is researched, taught and made publicly accessible.

From Munch to the present

The collection spans a wide arc from the 19th century through Expressionism and classical modernism to contemporary art. Highlights include works by Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann, which link northern German and northern European art traditions. Sculptures and works on paper are also on show. Changing exhibitions regularly take up current positions in contemporary art, ensuring that even returning visitors always discover something new. This breadth makes the Kunsthalle a place that brings together art history and the living present in a compact space.

Culture on the fjord shore

The Kunsthalle lies on Düsternbrooker Weg, just a few steps from the fjord and the Kiellinie — a rare combination of artistic enjoyment and maritime surroundings. A visit combines ideally with a walk by the water or a detour to the nearby GEOMAR aquarium. Wednesday evening, with its extended opening hours, is well suited to a relaxed tour after work. If you want to combine art and nature, allow plenty of time for the Düsternbrook area. The museum is conveniently reached from the city centre by bus and bike.
