A spot at the Bootshafen

The Foerde-Fraeulein sits right at Kiel's Bootshafen, where sailing boats and small yachts are moored side by side. From the seats by the water you look out over a tangle of masts and rigging, with a fresh breeze drifting in from the fjord. The atmosphere is easy-going and maritime, more snack-bar charm than fine restaurant. If you want to spend a sunny midday at the harbour, this is the right stop, including for a quick bite in between.

Freshly filled fish rolls

The focus is on classic fish rolls, crispy fried fish, matjes herring and changing daily catches, prepared fresh and without frills. The offering is uncomplicated and moderately priced, ideal for a quick hunger fix or a relaxed lunch by the water. If you like northern German classics such as a Bismarck or matjes roll, you will get your money's worth here. A cold drink goes well with it, best enjoyed straight away with a view of the boats, no reservation needed.

A maritime stop in the city centre

The Bootshafen lies centrally in Kiel-Mitte, just a few steps from the city centre and the Hoernbruecke bridge. This makes a visit to the Foerde-Fraeulein easy to combine with a stroll through town or a walk along the fjord. The location is best reached on foot, and bus and train stop nearby too. It is especially lovely on warm days, when the harbour quarter is lively; in sunshine the waterside seats fill up quickly, so feel free to come a little earlier.
