Kieler Brauerei

The Kieler Brauerei on the Alter Markt still brews its own beer and serves it fresh from the kettle. Alongside come hearty northern German dishes: pork knuckle, fried potatoes, schnitzel and brewery platters. Long wooden tables, copper brewing kettles and a buoyant atmosphere make it a sociable meeting point in the heart of the city.

Brewing at the Alter Markt

The Kieler Brauerei sits at the Alter Markt in the middle of the city centre and turns beer brewing into an experience. Gleaming copper brew kettles stand visibly in the dining room, the scent of malt hangs in the air, and the long wooden tables invite sociable gatherings. Its location between the Nikolaikirche and the Holstenstrasse makes the house an easily reached meeting point. Inside, the mood is often exuberant; outside, in good weather, a seat beckons from which to watch the bustle of the city.

Fresh beer and hearty plates

At the heart of it all is the house-brewed beer, poured fresh from the kettle, from pale lager to seasonal specialities. Alongside comes a robust kitchen: pork knuckle with a crispy crust, fried potatoes, schnitzel and the well-stocked brewery platter for anyone who wants to try a bit of everything. The combination of in-house beer and hearty food makes the house especially popular with groups. A beer tasting board is also a good option for sampling your way through the brewery's range.

A meeting point with long hours

The brewery is open daily from late morning until midnight, making it one of the few addresses that still offers kitchen and cold beer late into the evening. That makes it an ideal place to begin a night out, for larger celebrations or a nightcap after a stroll. For bigger table parties a reservation is recommended, especially at weekends and during Kieler Woche. Families also find room here, as the relaxed tavern atmosphere is anything but stiff.
