Fischraeucherei Holtenau

The Fischraeucherei Holtenau at the Tiessenkai still smokes eel, mackerel and salmon in its own oven. Fresh from the smoke onto an open sandwich, with a cold drink at the quay overlooking the canal: it hardly gets more northern German. An unpretentious, hearty stop for all lovers of smoked fish.

Straight from its own oven

What sets the Fischraeucherei Holtenau apart is its own smoking oven, in which eel, mackerel and salmon are traditionally cooked over beechwood. The scent of smoke hangs in the air, and the fish arrives fresh and warm straight onto an open sandwich. You can taste this craftsmanship, and it gives the place its unmistakable character. If you love smoked fish, you will experience northern Germany at its most honest and hearty here, entirely without frills.

An open sandwich and a cold drink

The offering is deliberately kept simple: freshly smoked fish on a hearty open sandwich, with a cold drink at the quay. You need nothing more for a satisfying bite by the water. Prices are moderate, the enjoyment down-to-earth and unadulterated. If you like, you can also take smoked fish home with you. A stop here is ideal as part of a walk along the canal, when you want a hearty break in between.

A canal view at the Tiessenkai

The smokehouse sits at the Tiessenkai in Holtenau, right by the Kiel Canal with its great locks. From here you look out over the passing ships and the maritime activity at the landing. The place is reachable by car, bus or, especially nicely, by fjord ferry. A visit combines well with a walk along the canal or a detour to the old lighthouse. On sunny days the quay is a popular meeting point, and then a smoked open sandwich is simply part of it.
