Alter Markt
The Alter Markt is the historic core of Kiel and has been the central square since the city's founding in the 13th century. It is dominated by St Nikolai Church and Barlach's Spirit Fighter. Cafés, restaurants and ice-cream parlors around the square invite visitors to linger, and in summer outdoor dining and market stalls shape the scene. Weekly markets and city festivals are held here regularly, and during Kieler Woche the square becomes a stage. The Alter Markt is the starting point for exploring the city center and the social living room of the old town.
Historic Core of Kiel
The Alter Markt has been the center of Kiel since the city's founding in the 13th century. Here trade routes once crossed, justice was administered and markets were held. To this day the square, together with the adjacent St Nikolai Church, forms the historic core of the old town. Even though most of the surrounding buildings were rebuilt after the wartime destruction, the square retained its function as a social focal point. Anyone wishing to understand Kiel's origins is best advised to begin their exploration here, where history and everyday life meet.
Meeting Point and Living Room
Around the Alter Markt, cafés, restaurants and ice-cream parlors invite visitors to linger. In the warmer months, outdoor dining and parasols shape the scene, and the square becomes the lively living room of the old town. Barlach's Spirit Fighter in front of St Nikolai Church is a popular meeting point and photo motif. Students, families and tourists mingle here at any time of day. The square unfolds its charm especially on mild summer evenings, when the eateries are busy and the life of the city flows together here.
Markets and Festivals
Weekly markets with regional produce are held regularly on the Alter Markt, and throughout the year city festivals repeatedly turn the square into a stage. During Kieler Woche in June, the Alter Markt is one of the festival's lively venues. In Advent a Christmas market rounds off the offering. From the square you can reach Holstenstraße, Dänische Straße and the fjord within a few minutes' walk each. The Alter Markt is thus an ideal starting point for exploring the old town on foot and experiencing Kiel's city life up close.
