Family highlights in a single day

We start with the seals at the GEOMAR Aquarium, take the ferry to Laboe into the submarine and finish building sandcastles on the beach.

1. 9:30 - 11:00

   GEOMAR Aquarium with seals

   The GEOMAR Aquarium on the Kiellinie is the perfect start for families. Inside, tropical and native fish swim; outside, the seals frolic in the large open-air pool. The feedings are an event — children press their noses flat against the glass.

   Tip: Check the feeding times in advance — that's when the seals are most active.

2. 11:15 - 12:00

   Fjord ferry to Laboe

   The ride on the fjord ferry is an adventure for children: a real ship, wind on your face and gulls over the water. Past shipyards and the naval harbour, it crosses the fjord to Laboe.

3. 12:00 - 13:15

   Lunch at Laboe harbour

   Around Laboe harbour there are family-friendly eateries and snack stands — fish fingers, chips and an ice cream by the water. A short break before heading into the submarine.
4. 13:30 - 15:30

   Submarine U-995 and Naval Memorial

   Submarine U-995 on land is a hit with little explorers: clambering through narrow hatches, marvelling at the torpedo room and command centre. Afterwards, if you like, take the lift up the tower of the Naval Memorial and gaze far across the Baltic.

   Tip: The submarine is narrow and low — for very small children it can feel a little claustrophobic.

5. 15:45 - 17:30

   Beach in Laboe

   Right next door, Laboe's sandy beach beckons. Shallow water, building sandcastles, hunting for shells and watching the bustle of ships on the fjord — a relaxed finale for the whole family.
6. 18:30

   Family-friendly dining in the city

   Back in Kiel, there are many easygoing restaurants with children's menus around Holstenstrasse — from Italian to a pancake kitchen. A cosy end to a long day.
