Kiel Week Guide
Kiel Week (Kieler Woche) is the largest sailing event in the world and at the same time northern Germany's biggest summer festival — every June millions of visitors stream to the fjord. This guide helps you plan a day in the bustle cleverly: watch the regattas in the morning, stroll the festival mile at midday, marvel at the windjammers in the afternoon and enjoy concerts and stages in the evening. Maritime fair at its purest.

Day 1
A day at Kiel Week
We start with the regattas on the fjord, stroll the festival mile, take in the windjammer parade and finish with the stage programme in the city.
- 9:30 - 11:30
Regattas from the Kiellinie
During Kiel Week the Kiellinie is the best grandstand: from the promenade you watch the sailing regattas on the fjord. Hundreds of boats of every class cruise off the coast — from Optimists to Olympic classes. Distant action with a water view.
Tip: Bring binoculars — that way you can get right up close to the regattas out on the fjord.

Festival mile on the Kiellinie
Along the Kiellinie, stall lines up beside stall: international cuisine, crafts, clubs and hands-on activities. The festival mile is the pulsing heart of Kiel Week, from morning until late into the night.
- 13:00 - 14:15
International market at the harbour
A lunch break at the international market: cuisine from around the world, from Scandinavian specialities to Far Eastern dishes. And of course the obligatory fish roll with a view of the fjord.
- 14:30 - 16:30
Windjammers and tall ships
A highlight for many visitors: the historic tall ships and windjammers that come into the fjord for Kiel Week. Moored in the harbour, some can be visited — and on the penultimate day the famous windjammer parade takes place.
- 17:00 - 19:00
Stage programme in the city centre
Stages are dotted across the whole city — from the town hall square to the Kiellinie. Live music, comedy and DJ sets create the mood. The programme ranges from local bands to big names.
- 19:30 - 23:00
An evening between fjord and city
Kiel Week knows no closing time: eating at the stalls, a beer by the water and the lights of the boats on the fjord. On the closing Sunday a grand fireworks display over the fjord crowns the festival.
