Kiel is a beach city in the middle of the city. This day combines the Kiellinie promenade with the finest urban beaches on the fjord: Falckenstein Beach in Friedrichsort and the beach of Schilksee at the mouth of the fjord. Sand, Baltic wind and the view of the ships coming and going — recreation without a long journey.

Promenade, sand and Baltic air
We start on the Kiellinie, travel to Falckenstein Beach and finish at the beach of Schilksee — Kiel's maritime beach axis in one day.

A walk along the Kiellinie
The day begins on the Kiellinie, the maritime waterfront promenade. Past boat harbours, the GEOMAR Aquarium and information boards on seafaring, it runs along the water. This is where the pulse of the sea city is best felt.
Tip: A hire bike makes the Kiellinie even more relaxed — the waterfront path is easy to cycle.

Falckenstein Beach in Friedrichsort
Falckenstein Beach is Kiel's most popular city beach — fine sand, shallow water and dunes right at the mouth of the fjord. Beach chairs invite you to linger, and offshore the large ships pass by towards the Baltic.

A beach snack in Friedrichsort
At Falckenstein Beach there are beach venues and snack stands — a fish roll, chips or a salad with a sea view. The perfect break between two beaches.

Beach and Olympic harbour of Schilksee
Schilksee at the mouth of the fjord was the sailing venue of the 1972 Olympic Games. Today the Olympic harbour, a broad sandy beach and a promenade define the place. Sailors cruise off the coast, the wind blows stronger — real Baltic feeling on the edge of the city.

Sunset by the water
At the beach of Schilksee or back on the Kiellinie, the day winds down — the sun sinks over the fjord, sails glow in the evening light and the ships pass quietly by.

Dinner at the Olympic harbour
Around the Olympic harbour in Schilksee and on the fjord there are restaurants with water views and fresh fish. A relaxed close to a day full of sand and salty air.
