Olympic legacy of 1972

Schilksee made sporting history in 1972 when the Olympic sailing competitions were held here. The purpose-built Olympic centre, with its striking terraced residential buildings and the large marina, still shapes the place today. Its architecture recalls the optimistic spirit of the early 1970s, and it continues to serve as a centre of sailing. Walking through the grounds, you sense the special character of this Olympic heritage. Marina and Baltic beach

As the centre of Kiel's sailing scene, Schilksee is the starting point of countless regattas, and the spacious marina holds sport and sailing boats packed tightly together. During Kieler Woche the famous windjammer parade begins here, when the great traditional sailing ships head out onto the fjord in an impressive formation. The beach with its pier invites swimming and strolling and offers a wide view across the Baltic. The combination of sporty harbour life and relaxed beach pleasure makes Schilksee a special destination in the far north of Kiel, drawing the active and those seeking rest alike.

Located in the far north

Schilksee is Kiel's northernmost district and lies picturesquely at the entrance of the fjord to the open Baltic. Despite its edge location the place is easy to reach: bus lines connect it with the city centre, and in season arriving by fjord ferry is appealing, linking Schilksee with Kiel and the bathing spots on the east bank. Cyclists follow the attractive shore paths along the fjord northwards. The waterside setting, the beach and the sailing centre make the longer journey well worthwhile and invite a full day out.
