Swimming at Falckenstein beach

Falckenstein beach is Kiel residents' favourite beach destination and Friedrichsort's showpiece. On a broad, bright strip of sand you can swim, sunbathe, stroll and fly kites, while out on the fjord ships sail in and out without pause. Beach chairs, a campsite and food outlets create a holiday mood right at the city's gates. On warm days especially it draws countless families and water-sports fans. With its view of the narrowest point of the fjord, Falckenstein beach is one of the loveliest places to experience Kiel's maritime flair first-hand.

Fortress and lighthouse

Friedrichsort owes its name and history to the old fortress that once secured the entrance to Kiel Fjord. Remains of the fortifications still recall this strategic importance at the narrowest point of the fjord. Offshore in the water stands the distinctive lighthouse that guides ships through the narrow passage and has become the district's landmark. The historic village core with its small streets preserves a rural flair that contrasts with the openness of the nearby beach. History and nature lie close together here.

Recreation in the north

Friedrichsort lies in the north of Kiel and is easy to reach as a recreation destination. Bus lines connect the district with the city centre, and lovely cycling and walking paths along the fjord lead to the beach. Those who wish can arrive by fjord ferry and enjoy the approach over the water. Falckenstein beach with its campsite is a classic outing for sunny days and is correspondingly well visited in summer. From here you can explore the coast further towards Schilksee and the northern bathing spots — ideal for extended tours along the water.
