Kiel's most popular city beach

Falckenstein Beach stretches along the outer shore of the fjord near Friedrichsort and is considered the best-known bathing beach of the state capital. The long, fine-sand Baltic beach offers beach chairs, wide lawns and a relaxed atmosphere that attracts families and young people alike. Beach bars and food stalls bring a holiday mood in summer. The gently sloping water makes the beach especially child-friendly. Unlike the sheltered inner-fjord shores, Falckenstein already lies more open to the Baltic, which brings a little more wind and breadth — ideal for a genuine beach feeling right outside the city.

Water sports and Fort Friedrichsort

The open setting makes Falckenstein a popular area for kite- and windsurfers; a surf school offers courses and rental right on the beach. If you prefer something quieter, simply watch the large ships sailing into the fjord here — an impressive spectacle at close range. Right by the beach lies the historic Fort Friedrichsort, a former fortress that lends the surroundings a historical accent. Active water sports thus combine with maritime ship traffic and a touch of military history to make for a varied day at the beach.

Getting there and the best time

The beach lies in the north of Kiel and is reachable by bus, bike or car; in high season it is advisable to arrive early because of the sought-after parking spaces. It is especially lively in the summer months and during Kieler Woche, when the beach becomes a meeting point. If you seek quiet, it is best to come in the morning or outside the holiday season. An appealing alternative is to arrive by fjord ferry or by bike along the coast. A beach day combines well with a detour to Friedrichsort or onwards to the Schilksee Olympic Centre.
