Hörn Bridge

A rare three-part folding bascule bridge

Opened in 1997, the Hörn Bridge is one of only a few three-part folding bascule bridges in the world and a technical masterpiece. Instead of lifting upwards like ordinary bascule bridges, it folds together in an unusual movement into an N-shaped position to let ships pass. This idiosyncratic construction makes it an architectural curiosity known far beyond Kiel. As a purely pedestrian and cycle bridge, it also connects two shores of the inner fjord by a short route. Engineering enthusiasts value it as an example of innovative northern German engineering.

The spectacle of folding

Several times a day the bridge folds together before the eyes of onlookers — a slow, almost dance-like process that always draws a crowd. If you want to witness the moment of opening, follow the fixed times, which are geared to ship traffic. From the bank, the manoeuvre can be comfortably watched and photographed while boats use the cleared passage. The interplay of precise technology and maritime activity is a small spectacle well worth the visit. In good light especially, striking shots of the folded steel structure emerge.

A link to the Hörn quarter

The Hörn Bridge lies at the end of the inner fjord and connects the city centre with the modern quarter around the Germaniahafen and the science campus. It is therefore not only a landmark but also a practical route for pedestrians and cyclists. A walk across the bridge opens up fine views of the harbour basin and the surrounding glass architecture. The main station is only a few steps away, making the bridge an ideal starting point for exploring the Hörn. Cafés and waterside promenades then invite you to linger.
