A Monument to Seafaring

The Laboe Naval Memorial was built between 1927 and 1936 on the eastern shore of the Kiel Fjord. Originally intended to commemorate the naval personnel who fell in the First World War, today it understands itself as a monument to peaceful seafaring and commemorates those lost at sea of all nations. The striking tower, around 85 metres high and shaped like a stylised ship's bow, is visible from afar and is one of the most-visited sights in Schleswig-Holstein. Its history and significance make a visit more than just a viewing experience.

Ascent and Panorama

A lift and stairs lead up to the viewing platform, from which a magnificent panorama opens up. In clear weather the view extends over the Baltic Sea, the entire Kiel Fjord and Kiel opposite, far into the surrounding countryside. Ships entering the fjord can be followed with the eye from up here. The memorial hall and the underground historical hall document the history of seafaring. Anyone planning the ascent should bring windproof clothing, as the open platform is noticeably breezier than down below.

Getting There and Combining with U 995

Laboe lies on the eastern shore of the fjord and can be reached from Kiel by car, by bus, or — most atmospherically — by the fjord ferry. The ferry trip itself is already an experience and offers postcard views of the fjord. The walk-in submarine U 995 lies directly below the memorial, so both destinations combine perfectly into a maritime day trip. Laboe's beach and promenade invite a subsequent stroll. Allow several hours for the whole visit to experience both attractions at leisure.
