Kiel Maritime Museum
The Kiel Maritime Museum is housed in the listed fish hall of 1910 on the Sartorikai, directly on the fjord. The permanent exhibition tells the story of shipping, shipbuilding and fishing on the Kiel Fjord. On display are ship models, nautical instruments, paintings and a giant sperm-whale skeleton. In the museum harbour outside lie historic original vessels such as a sea rescue cruiser and steamers, some of which can be visited. The museum is a key place to understand Kiel's maritime identity.
The fish hall as a museum venue
The museum is housed in the former fish auction hall of 1910, a striking brick building right on the Sartorikai. Fresh catches were once auctioned here in the early morning; the tall windows and open hall structure still recall that bustling past. Through its conversion into the maritime museum, an important industrial monument has been preserved. The architecture itself already tells a piece of Kiel's harbour history before you even look at a display case. The location right on the water makes the visit a coherent experience between exhibition and real harbour activity.
Models, a whale skeleton and seafaring
The permanent exhibition leads through centuries of shipping, shipbuilding and fishing on the fjord. Detailed ship models, historic navigational instruments and paintings illustrate how closely Kiel's history is interwoven with the sea. A special eye-catcher is the mighty sperm-whale skeleton, which makes the scale of these ocean giants tangible. Changing themes shed light on shipyard work, the navy and the everyday life of sailors. The display appeals to adults and children alike and vividly conveys why Kiel has been shaped by the water for generations — an ideal introduction to the city's maritime identity.
Museum harbour with original ships
Right in front of the hall lies the museum harbour, where historic original vessels are moored — including steamers, a buoy tender and a sea rescue cruiser. On certain days some of the vessels can also be viewed from the inside, which tangibly complements the exhibition. The quay is freely accessible and is worth a walk in its own right. The museum lies in the heart of the city centre, just a few steps from the Alter Markt and the fjord promenade. A visit combines well with a stroll along the Kiellinie or a harbour cruise.
