Schilksee Beach & Olympic Centre
Schilksee on the outer fjord became world-famous through the 1972 Summer Olympics, when the sailing competitions were held here. The striking Olympic Centre with its Olympic harbour still shapes the look of the district and is the hub of international sailing during Kieler Woche. The beach with its promenade, beach chairs and views of the Baltic invites swimming and strolling. Sailors and water-sports enthusiasts find ideal conditions here. Schilksee combines maritime sporting history with a beach holiday right on the city's doorstep.
Venue of the 1972 Olympic sailors
Schilksee made sporting history when the sailing competitions of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics were held here. The striking Olympic Centre with its harbour, accommodation and sports facilities was built specially for the event and still shapes the district today. The sober architecture of the seventies is a piece of contemporary history in its own right and recalls a moment when Kiel stood at the centre of world attention. Walking through the grounds, you can still sense the special atmosphere of that former major event. Schilksee is thus inseparably linked to the city's international sailing history.
Olympic harbour and sailing
The Olympic harbour remains a lively centre of sailing to this day and, during Kieler Woche, the venue of international regattas. Hundreds of yachts and dinghies then fill the harbour basin, and the jetties fill with sailors from all over the world. Even outside events, maritime activity enlivens the district. Visitors can watch the colourful bustle by the water, admire boats and enjoy the salty Baltic air. For sailing enthusiasts, Schilksee is one of the most important places on the German Baltic coast and a must on any maritime tour of Kiel.
Beach and promenade in the north
Besides its sporting heritage, Schilksee attracts visitors with a beach and a promenade that invite swimming and strolling. Beach chairs, wide views of the Baltic and a fresh breeze turn a stay into a little coastal holiday on the city's doorstep. The location on the outer fjord gives an open sea feeling. The district lies in the north of Kiel and can be reached by bus, bike or fjord ferry. A visit combines well with the nearby Falckenstein Beach for a relaxed day along the northern coastline of the state capital.
