Schilksee Beach & Olympic Centre

Venue of the 1972 Olympic sailors

Schilksee made sporting history when the sailing competitions of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics were held here. The striking Olympic Centre with its harbour, accommodation and sports facilities was built specially for the event and still shapes the district today. The sober architecture of the seventies is a piece of contemporary history in its own right and recalls a moment when Kiel stood at the centre of world attention. Beach and promenade in the north

Besides its sporting heritage, Schilksee attracts visitors with a beach and a promenade that invite swimming and strolling. Beach chairs, wide views of the Baltic and a fresh breeze turn a stay into a little coastal holiday on the city's doorstep. The location on the outer fjord gives an open sea feeling. The district lies in the north of Kiel and can be reached by bus, bike or fjord ferry. A visit combines well with the nearby Falckenstein Beach for a relaxed day along the northern coastline of the state capital.
