Schwentine Estuary

Eastern Holstein's Largest River

At around 60 kilometres long, the Schwentine is the largest river in eastern Holstein. Coming from the Holstein Switzerland region, it flows through numerous lakes before emptying into the fjord within Kiel's city limits between Wellingdorf and Dietrichsdorf. The near-natural estuary area with floodplain forest, reed belts and wet meadows forms a valuable biotope right on the city's doorstep. Historic watermills along the river recall that the current of the Schwentine was once used to generate power. This mix of nature and history makes the area especially appealing.
