Schwentine Estuary
The Schwentine is the largest river in eastern Holstein and flows into the fjord within Kiel's city limits between Wellingdorf and Dietrichsdorf. The near-natural estuary area with floodplain forest, reed belts and hiking trails is a popular recreation area. Along the river, historic watermills, the Schwentinepark and boat jetties invite visitors to linger. The water landscape can be explored by canoe or on the small Schwentine ferry. The estuary combines urban nature with maritime fjord flair and offers a quiet counterpoint to the bustling western shore.
Eastern Holstein's Largest River
At around 60 kilometres long, the Schwentine is the largest river in eastern Holstein. Coming from the Holstein Switzerland region, it flows through numerous lakes before emptying into the fjord within Kiel's city limits between Wellingdorf and Dietrichsdorf. The near-natural estuary area with floodplain forest, reed belts and wet meadows forms a valuable biotope right on the city's doorstep. Historic watermills along the river recall that the current of the Schwentine was once used to generate power. This mix of nature and history makes the area especially appealing.
Hiking and Paddling
Along the Schwentine estuary, hiking trails lead through the Schwentinepark and along the shore, offering quiet recreation away from the bustle. The area is especially popular with paddlers: by canoe you can explore the near-natural river course, past reeds and mature trees. Boat jetties and rental stations make getting started easy. The small Schwentine ferry connects the banks and is part of the public transport on the water. Thus the water landscape can be experienced in various ways, whether on foot, by bike or from a boat.
A Place of Calm on the East Shore
The Schwentine estuary lies on the eastern shore of the fjord and forms a quiet counterpoint to the busy western shore with the Kiellinie. Anyone wishing to escape the bustle of the city centre will find nature and quiet in immediate proximity to the city here. The area can be reached by bus, bike or the fjord ferry, whose route begins at the Schwentine estuary. From here the outing combines well with a fjord trip towards Laboe. Families appreciate the child-friendly paths and picnic spots by the water. The Schwentine is thus a versatile destination for nature-based recreation.
