Dragon boat racing is a spectator sport you watch from a few feet away. Teams paddle long, brightly painted boats through the Innenhafen (inner harbor) beside the Hoernbruecke, a folding pedestrian bridge, with drummers setting the stroke rate and the crowd packed along both quays.
Good to know before you book
- The Hoern basin sits right behind Kiel's main train station, so the racing is walkable even on a short stop in town.
- Mid-August is peak Baltic beach season. Pair the races with an afternoon at the Falckenstein beach or in Laboe across the fjord.
- Viewing along the quays is open to anyone walking by, no ticket involved.
