The Kieler Weihnachtsdorf (Kiel Christmas Village) is the city's Christmas market: wooden huts along Holstenstrasse and around Asmus-Bremer-Platz, Gluehwein (hot spiced wine) served in ceramic mugs, roasted almonds and craft stalls, with a Baltic wind supplying the maritime part. German Christmas markets run for weeks rather than days, so almost any December visit lands inside the season.
Good to know before you book
- Gluehwein mugs usually carry a small refundable deposit called Pfand. Hand the mug back at the stand and you get the deposit returned.
- Bring cash. Plenty of market stands are cash only and do not accept US cards.
- Daylight is short this far north in December. The market looks its best after dark, and dark arrives early in the afternoon.
