Kiel Week is the largest sailing event in the world and at the same time northern Europe's biggest summer festival. For nine days thousands of sailing boats on the fjord, stages along the Kiellinie promenade and a huge funfair turn the whole city into one big celebration.
Kieler Woche, known in English as Kiel Week, is the largest sailing event in the world and the biggest summer festival in northern Europe. For nine days the Kieler Foerde (Kiel Fjord) fills with regatta fleets and tall ships while the shoreline turns into one long open-air festival of stages, food stands and a funfair. Almost all of it plays out on public streets and along the water, so the scarce part of the trip is not a ticket, it is a bed.
Good to know before you book
- The Kiellinie, the promenade along the western bank of the fjord, is the main grandstand: racing on the water on one side, stages and stalls on the other.
- Book as far ahead as you can. Kiel Week fills the city and the smaller fjord towns around it.
- Regattas run all week, and the tall ship parade on the closing weekend is the single busiest day of the year in Kiel.
