Kiel by Bike

Kiel is wonderful to explore by bike — flat, with well-built paths and always by the water. This tour leads from the Kiellinie on the west shore across the harbour to the Schwentine estuary and to Dietrichsdorf on the east shore. The fjord ferry, which carries bikes, brings you back in a relaxed way. A loop full of water views and sea air.

Best time to visit: April to October — it rolls best in dry weather

Kiel by Bike

Day 1

Around the fjord

We cycle along the Kiellinie, cross the harbour, follow the Schwentine to Dietrichsdorf and take the ferry back across the fjord.

  1. 9:30 - 11:00

    Kiellinie by bike

Start on the Kiellinie: the waterfront path leads along the water through Duesternbrook, past the GEOMAR Aquarium and the boat harbours. Flat, even and always with a view of the fjord — the ideal opening to a bike tour.

Tip: If you don't have your own bike, hire one at one of the rental stations in the city centre.

  2. 11:15 - 12:30

    Harbour and Schwentine estuary

Continue along the harbour southwards to the mouth of the Schwentine. The river flows into the fjord here — a green, quiet contrast to the bustle of the city. Information boards explain the industrial and natural history of the east shore.

  3. 12:30 - 13:45

    Lunch in Dietrichsdorf

On the east shore in Dietrichsdorf, around the Schwentine estuary and the university of applied sciences, there are venues and cafes for a break. A fish roll or a warm lunch before continuing on.

  4. 14:00 - 15:30

    Schwentine cycle path

A detour along the Schwentine leads into the green: the river winds through meadows and past old mill sites. A quiet, shady stretch away from the water of the fjord.

  5. 15:45 - 16:30

    Back by ferry

Back at the shore: the fjord ferry carries bikes and brings cyclists back across the fjord to Kiel in a relaxed way. Crossing with the bike on deck is a fine end to the tour.

  6. 18:30 - 20:30

    An evening in the city

After the tour, the venues around Holstenstrasse and the Old Market beckon. A well-earned refuel with northern German cuisine or a freshly poured beer.
